The academic internationalization project of the Polytechnic Institute of Bragança aims at promoting cooperation, mobility and transparency within the European and extra-European Higher Education areas through the following guidelines:
- Consolidation of international mobility among students, teaching and non-teaching staff in the European and extra-European Higher Education areas;
- Implementation of good practices, thus promoting transparency and both academic and professional recognition of previous training;
- Promotion of internships, projects and dissertations in a real business context, thus encouraging employability of students and the openness to the European and non-European labour markets;
- Cooperation with institutions of Portuguese-speaking countries’ aiming at the development of higher education, technical and scientific qualification of technic and academic staff, as well as to the development of research and development projects;
- Attraction of non-Portuguese students to the IPB study cycles lectured in English;
- Promotion of the teaching of Portuguese language and culture to international students.

In the last two decades the IPB has distinguished itself in terms of international cooperation:
- The IPB has a well-established and successful internationalization program, involving an annual mobility flow of more than 1000 students, as a result of the cooperation with several European higher education (Erasmus programme) and non-European institutions, highlighting the ones belonging to Portuguese-speaking countries;
- The IPB is the Portuguese HEI with the greatest number of Erasmus Intensive Programmes – between 2007 and 2013 there were 14 IPs with the IPB as coordinating institution and 16 as partner institution, in a total number of 59 IP editions;
- The IPB participated in several European centralized programmes, namely Comenius, Erasmus, Leonardo da Vinci, Tempus and Erasmus Mundus (9 projects between 2006 and 2013);
- The IPB was awarded the ECTS label by the European Commission in 2011, thus assuring the quality of information in terms of academic offer and students’ mobility management in the European Higher Education Area;
- The IPB takes part of the NOW Portugal Erasmus Consortium, representing the Portuguese North Region and promoting professional internships and projects, involving national and international students and companies, enhancing the employability of students and graduates;
- The IPB develops several cooperation projects for the improvement of higher education, research and international mobility of students and teaching staff in Portuguese-speaking countries, namely Brazil, Angola, Cape Verde, Guinea-Bissau, Mozambique and São Tomé and Príncipe;
- The IPB offers curricular units and study cycles (bachelor and masters) taught in English, as well as Portuguese Language and Culture courses for international students (www.ipb.pt/admissions);
- Since 2014, IPB is coordinator and partner of a considerable number of Erasmus academic projects, including Strategic Partnerships and Cooperation Partnerships, Capacity Building, Alliances for Innovation and Erasmus Mundus Design Measures (47 projects started between 2014 and 2023).
- The IPB student community is composed by students from all over Portugal, Europe and the world. IPB is nowadays a multicultural institution, where 38% of its students have non-Portuguese nationality.
