Admission requirementsThe holders of the licenciado degree or legal equivalent, the holders of a foreign academic degree and the holders of a relevant academic, scientific or professional curriculum vitae may apply to the 2nd cycle of studies, as stated in the description of the Portuguese Higher Education System, provided by NARIC (http://www.dges.mctes.pt/DGES/pt/Reconhecimento/NARICENIC/) and presented in section 8 of the Diploma Supplement.
Recognition of prior learningFollowing the implementation of the Bologna Process and the consequent legislation regarding the mobility of students among degrees and higher education institutions, prior learning must be recognized and credited. The prior learning concept comprises all the previous learning/training undertaken in other higher education study cycles in national or international institutions (crediting of certified training), as well as previous professional experience and any post-secondary school training or education. As such, the IPB promotes the crediting of the student’s prior learning when arriving at the institution.
Aiming at a quick and full integration of the student in his/her new education programme, the recognition procedures must be submitted when enrolling at the IPB.

Qualification requirements and regulations90 ECTS credits (30 per semester). 3 semesters. 40 weeks of study per year (20 weeks per semester). 1620 total hours of study per year; 1 credit corresponds to 27 hours. A variable number of contact (teaching) hours, depending on the established schedule for each Course Unit. It includes a scientific dissertation, a project work or a professional traineeship which will be concluded with a final report comprising 30 credits ECTS.
The holders of this course are allowed to develop an expertise Professional high level. The holders of this qualification may apply to the Order of Nurses. The professional title the of Nurses is awarded by this institution, according to its internal rules.
Profile of the programmeThe profile of the programme comprises the development of the technical-scientific knowledge and professional skills in the study areas of Nursing; Health; Psychology; Sociology; Therapy and Rehabilitation. Nursing, Health, Psychology, Educational Sciences , Management Sciences.
Key learning outcomesStudents should develop skills to:
a) To develop scientific, technical, relational, ethical, legal and research skills needed to provide specialized nursing care of high quality in medical and surgical fields;
b) To form professionals able to promote strong and motivating leadership adjusted to challenges of society, organizations, clinical governance and to specialized nursing care to the person / family in a critical condition in conjunction with multidisciplinary teams;
c) To enable the achievement of gains in health arisen from the current needs in specialized health care in medical and surgical nursing field, from new issues and health policies, and from demographic, social, economic and epidemiological changes;
d) To enable the student to a safe specialized clinical nursing praxis with persons in a critical condition based on scientific evidence supported by strong and valid pattern of knowledges.
Occupational profiles of graduatesThe degree of "mestre" (master) in Medical and Surgical Nursing belongs to the education and training area of Health Sciences. Graduates are specialized to develop a professional activity within the profile of the programme.
Access to further studiesThe degree of "mestre" allows to proceed to 3rd cycle studies, according to the diagram of the Portuguese Higher Education System, provided by NARIC (http://www.dges.mctes.pt/DGES/pt/Reconhecimento/NARICENIC/) and presented in section 8 of the Diploma Supplement.
